COOPER & KIM
Kim's story begins as a 1.5-generation immigrant from Vietnam, growing up in the vibrant community of Chinatown in sunny Los Angeles. She immigrated to America with her parents at the age of three through the Amerasian Homecoming Act. Her journey took her to Santa Barbara for university and even included a year spent living in the Netherlands. Today, she works as a senior content marketing manager in Silicon Valley
Now residing in the East Bay with her husband and two beloved dogs, Sachi and Cooper. Although she has been away from Southern California for eight years, she spent five of those years in San Francisco, cherishing the proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge. The breathtaking views of the iconic bridge at sunset never fail to captivate her.
Kim has a strong affinity for a fusion of Japanese and Mid-Century Modern aesthetics, which she reflects in her living space. Natural materials like oak, warm muted color palettes, and contrasting accents define her sense of harmony and contrast in design. This sensibility extends to her wardrobe choices, where she experiments with various styles that flatter her physique and complexion. Cooper's accessories also receive careful consideration, with Kim often selecting shades of blue that beautifully complement his dark red fur. She aims to create a visual connection between them when they step out together, aligning his accessories with her personal style.
While Kim had experience caring for fish, guinea pigs, and rabbits, she had always dreamed of having a dog. The furry addition to their family came in the form of Sachi, a rescued husky mix primarily belonging to her husband's family. However, Kim was determined to choose her first dog breed, and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi caught her attention. Their distinctive appearance, intelligence, and vibrant personalities made them the ideal match for her active lifestyle.
Bringing Cooper into their lives was a combination of spontaneity and careful consideration. Right before graduating from college, Kim had set her heart on welcoming a Pembroke Welsh Corgi upon graduation. However, when her husband (then-boyfriend) informed her of a corgi puppy needing a home, they wasted no time in making the journey to meet him. They fell in love with Cooper at first sight and arranged the necessary funds to bring him home the following day. Cooper became an irreplaceable part of their family and joined Kim in her final year of undergrad.
Now enter Cooper, who joined their family at just 10 weeks old on December 21, 2014. Still a spirited nine-year-old, Cooper has become integral to their lives. Kim fondly recalls a humorous memory from Cooper's puppyhood. A curious toddler approached Cooper with a croissant in hand, unknowingly tempting the mischievous pup. In a swift and sly move, Cooper managed to snatch the croissant, leaving the bemused child puzzled by its sudden disappearance. It was a testament to Cooper's charming and playful personality.
Naming Cooper was a thoughtful process. While initial options like Barry Allen and Humphrey Bogart were considered, they took a more systematic approach, going through names alphabetically. When they reached 'C,' the name 'Cooper' resonated perfectly with his character. His Instagram handle, @littlecooperbear, was inspired by his resemblance to an adorable bear cub during his puppy days.
Cooper's unique character is often described as a "smart a-hole" by Kim. His intelligence shines through as he thoughtfully considers his actions, though sometimes his sassiness gets the best of him. If he's frustrated or in the mood for play, he isn't shy about voicing his opinions. Despite his cheeky behavior, Cooper showers those he knows and trusts with exceptional affection. He adores new people who shower him with pets and was even certified as a therapy dog. Kim admits that Cooper is truly one of the most spoiled dogs she knows, going above and beyond to pamper him on special occasions, including making him a dog-friendly Vietnamese meal on his birthdays.

Cooper thrives on engaging in games like go-find-it and puzzle toys that involve treats. While fetch used to be his favorite outdoor activity, they had to quit cold turkey to prevent leg and back injuries. Nowadays, Cooper finds joy in hikes and sniffing plants. Their daily routines, as well as occasional changes, significantly impact Cooper's lifestyle. He quickly adapts to different routines within a day or so, finding comfort in the constants such as breakfast and dinner times, and his mid-day potty breaks. Cooper is keenly aware of their work-from-home days, often choosing to relax in the home office with Kim. On the rare occasions, they are away, he waits by the door near the couch, catching up on his sleep. Weekends hold a special excitement for Cooper, as they typically involve outings and adventures. These moments spent together outdoors, exploring beautiful locations and enjoying each other's company, have become the highlight of their shared experiences.
Kim believes owning a dog entails significant responsibilities and long-term commitments. Dogs rely on their owners for physical care, emotional well-being, and social interaction. Beyond meeting their basic needs, dogs require love, attention, and understanding. Kim recognizes the unique personalities and emotional needs of dogs, ensuring Cooper is cared for in every aspect of his life. The responsibilities of dog ownership may pose challenges, but the immeasurable rewards of love, loyalty, and companionship make it all worthwhile.

She affectionately considers him her 'once-in-a-lifetime' dog, a beloved companion who touches her heart deeply. While she doesn't have children yet, her bond with Cooper has evoked her maternal instincts in the most beautiful way. His joyful presence fills her life with happiness and a sense of pride that is truly fulfilling. Cooper is her 'heart dog,' forever cherished and loved.
Reflecting on their adventures together, Kim's face lights up with a smile. From witnessing the sunrise at Glacier Point in Yosemite to experiencing the beauty of The Wave in Arizona, these moments spent with Cooper bring her immeasurable joy. Yet, it is the simple sight of him happy and content that brings her the greatest happiness, knowing that they are providing him with a fulfilled life.
